Iceland has one of the highest coffee-consumption levels in the world, with estimates around 8–9 kg of coffee per person each year. That means countless everyday coffee moments — and countless takeaway cups. Although most conventional paper cups feel like clean paper, they often contain a hidden plastic lining, which can make them difficult to recycle or compost and raises growing concerns about plastic use in food packaging.

EcoCups give you certified European quality at a genuinely competitive price. The barrier board is made in Finland, and the cups are manufactured in Poland.

The coating bonds into the paper fibre itself — there is no separate plastic film. Made from virgin fibres (OBA-free) for high chemical and microbiological purity, the cup is suitable for all hot and cold beverages including espresso and filter coffee. Certified EN 13432 (industrial), 9P0066 (home/garden), FPPC036 (Flustix, min. 98% plastic-free), PTS-RH 021:2021 (>99% recyclable), FSC, ISO 9001 and FSSC 22000.

EcoCups are paper cups with a water-based barrier coating instead of a plastic (PE) lining. That means there is no plastic film between the drink and the paper — so the whole cup can be composted and recycled as paper, which a standard PE-lined cup cannot.
Are they suitable for hot coffee? ⌄

What sizes are available? ⌄

Where are the cups manufactured? ⌄
The cups are manufactured in Poland from Finnish barrier board. It is a fully European supply chain — no long-haul sourcing — and you are invoiced locally in ISK by an Icelandic company.
Are these cups plastic-free? ⌄
The cups use a water-based barrier coating made with non-plastic polymers, and the board is independently certified by Flustix as min. 98% plastic-free (FPPC036). The manufacturer states the barrier contains no plastic. Unlike a PE lining, there is no plastic film between the paper and the drink.
Are they compostable in Iceland? ⌄
EcoCups are certified for both industrial composting (EN 13432) and home composting (9P0066). We are also confirming acceptance directly with Reykjavík's GAJA organic facility, and will document that for B2B buyers as soon as it is in writing.
Can the cups be recycled as paper? ⌄
Yes — because there is no plastic lining, the cups can be recycled in the paper stream (PAP21), unlike PE-lined cups. The board is certified as more than 99% recyclable as paperboard.
Are the cups PFAS-free? ⌄
Our manufacturers declare that no PFAS or fluorine derivatives are used at any stage of production. We can provide that supplier declaration with your order.
What is the difference between the EcoCups coating, PE, and PLA? ⌄
EcoCups use a water-based barrier coating, PE uses a fossil-plastic film, and PLA uses a bio-based plastic. Only EcoCups are both home-compostable and paper-recyclable in Iceland: PE is neither, and PLA needs industrial composting at high temperatures that is not reliably available here.
Do they need Iceland's plastic-content marking? ⌄
Because the coating contains no plastic, EcoCups are not intended to carry Iceland's plastic-content marking — supported by the manufacturer's statement and certifications. We are collecting formal Icelandic documentation to confirm this for B2B buyers; standard PE and PLA cups are subject to the marking.

Does shipping the cups to Iceland cancel out the benefit? ⌄
No — the cups are manufactured in European factories and shipped by sea, which adds only a small fraction of the saving from switching away from plastic-lined cups. We include this because honest accounting matters more than selective sustainability claims.
