The first raw cake I made was for my own birthday

Katya, who makes the cakes at Love Raw Cake

It was during Covid. Everyone was learning something that year — some people baked bread, some made kombucha. I made kombucha too, as it happens. But what I really wanted to learn was how to make a cake that was good for me, so I taught myself raw cakes, and the first one I ever made was for my own birthday.

I did it for myself and for my family, because I wanted us to eat something that was actually good for us. Then I went and did two proper courses, and somewhere in the middle of the second one a thought arrived that changed everything: why only for me?

The people I started thinking about

I knew there were people who couldn’t eat an ordinary cake at all — an allergy, or sugar they can’t tolerate, or dairy. And there were people who simply think carefully about their health and had quietly given up on cake altogether. I wanted them to have something beautiful too, not a compromise.

So I started selling almost as soon as I started learning. I will be honest with you — it was frightening. Making a cake for your family is one thing; making one that somebody has paid for is another. I still remember my very first box, and exactly who it went to.

Why they have to be beautiful

Back then, “raw cake” meant something thrown together — a brown mass, not much to look at. That bothered me. A cake is for a celebration, and it should look like one. So I spend real time on how each cake looks, and that is deliberate: the point is that eating well should feel like a pleasure, not like going without.

What I actually believe

Somewhere along the way I noticed something, and it turned out to be the whole idea behind Love Raw Cake: you can only make a good result out of good ingredients. It is true of a cake — there is nowhere to hide when there is no sugar and no flour doing the work for you. And I think it is true of a life. Put something good in, something bright and kind, and you get something good back.

That is really why I do this. I love people, and I love making cakes for them.
